There is no path down to the Benagil sea cave and nowhere to tie up. Kayaks, paddleboards and small hulls fit under the arch; the big catamarans photograph it from the water. Read the listing carefully — plenty of trips say Benagil and mean the outside.
Kayak in and stand on the sand
The only way to land inside and look straight up through the oculus. Short paddle from Benagil beach, and the guides read the swell before anyone goes under the arch.
Speedboat, six grottoes, one morning
Rigid inflatables duck into arches a catamaran cannot reach, run the grotto coast west from Albufeira, and usually pick up dolphins on the way home.

Alfama is a staircase with houses attached, and the tram does the climbing for you. The capital keeps its best hours at the ends of the day: viewpoints in the morning, the Tagus at sunset, a fado room at ten.

Madeira walks its water. The Azores watch theirs.
A levada is an irrigation channel cut across the mountain to move rain from the wet north face to the dry south, and the maintenance path beside it became Madeira’s trail network: flat, long, occasionally through an unlit tunnel. In the Azores the day happens offshore instead — resident sperm whales, with blues and fins passing through in spring.
Portugal keeps three things to itself.
Cliffs and cathedrals turn up all over southern Europe. A sea cave with a skylight, footpaths built beside irrigation channels and a music sung without a microphone belong to this country alone.
The Benagil Oculus
Halfway along the Algarve’s limestone coast the sea has hollowed a dome out of the cliff and punched a skylight through the top of it. There is no path down and nowhere to tie up, so the way in is a kayak, a paddleboard or a boat small enough to clear the arch. Morning is the window: the swell builds through the day and so does the queue of hulls outside.

The Levadas of Madeira
Rain falls on the north face of Madeira and the farms are on the south, so from the fifteenth century islanders cut channels across the mountain to carry it over. The path the maintenance crews walked is now the island’s trail network — almost flat, very long, laurel forest most of the way, and now and then a tunnel where a head torch stops being optional.

Fado
Two guitars, one of them the pear-shaped twelve-string Portuguese guitarra, and a singer who works without amplification. The rooms are small and the silence is a convention rather than a request. Lisbon fado came out of the dockside quarters and sounds like it; Coimbra’s is a university tradition, sung by men in black student capes.

Algarve cave trips and Azores whale boats are called off by swell rather than by rain, and it happens more often than the photographs suggest. The refund is automatic; the day still needs filling. Cellars, kitchens and tiled palaces do not care what the wind is doing.
